Our driveway has a very steep section that’s difficult to navigate in wet weather. Can you improve traction without major reconstruction?

Surface texture significantly affects traction. Options include saw-cut grooves every 2-3 inches, creating channels that help tires grip; deep broom finishes perpendicular to the slope direction; or exposed aggregate, providing a natural texture. For existing concrete in otherwise good condition, we can retrofit saw-cut grooves without full replacement. For driveways needing replacement anyway, we incorporate appropriate traction treatments during installation. The right solution depends on your concrete’s current condition and the severity of the slope.

There’s solid rock everywhere on our lot. How does that affect concrete work?

Shallow rock affects excavation methods and costs, but doesn’t prevent concrete installation. For driveways and patios, we need the depth of base materials and the thickness of concrete. Shallow rock requires breaking using pneumatic equipment or cutting with specialized saws. The rock itself provides excellent structural support once proper depth is achieved. We probe during estimates to assess rock depth and include appropriate allowances in proposals.

We want a large patio with the best possible view, but that location drops off steeply. What are our options?

Steep-view areas can accommodate patios through several approaches: cantilevered structures extending over slopes, terraced, multi-level patios stepping down with the terrain, or cut-and-fill construction with retaining walls creating level areas. Each approach has different structural requirements, costs, and aesthetic results. For significant slopes, engineered solutions are typically required. We discuss options during estimates, explaining what’s constructible on your specific site and helping you balance view quality with practical construction considerations.

How do you handle drainage on cliff-side properties where water wants to run off in all directions?

Drainage on hillside properties requires directing water toward appropriate paths without creating erosion. We design concrete surfaces with grades directing water to designated collection points. Swales, French drains, or surface channels may capture flow and route it to controlled drainage paths. Edge treatments prevent water from running off concrete onto erosion-prone slopes. We evaluate your overall site drainage during estimates and incorporate appropriate water management into every project.

The quotes we’ve received for our project vary widely. Why such big differences?

Challenging sites involve variables that contractors may estimate very differently: rock excavation scope, access logistics, slope-specific techniques, and quality standards all significantly affect pricing. Lower quotes may underestimate rock conditions, use simpler techniques inappropriate for extreme grades, or reflect less experience with demanding sites. We encourage comparing not just prices but approaches, asking each contractor specifically how they’ll handle your site’s challenges.

We’re planning a pool with concrete decking on our sloped lot. Is coordination with pool contractors important?

Absolutely. Pools on steep lots require significant coordination between the pool contractor, engineers, and the concrete contractor. The pool is typically cut into the hillside with retaining walls on the downhill side. Concrete decking must integrate with the pool coping, drain properly, and manage overall site drainage. Sequencing matters, too, with deck concrete typically following pool shell completion.
